The Problem

According to the UNESCO report of September 2016, “India will be a century late in achieving its universal education goals. Hence we will achieve our universal primary goals only in 2042, universal lower secondary education in 2059, and universal upper secondary education in 2084.” (UNESCO, 2016)

To address this problem, the 300M Citizens’ Challenge was created. This initiative aims to reach 300 million children through organisations that support education as a means of empowering children. The 300M Citizens’ Challenge uses an LMS platform to provide culturally relevant and educational content to partner organisations and children, using Katha’s unique StoryPedagogy approach.

This approach focuses on five key areas:

The goal is to give children the best learning experience possible and encourage them to become lifelong learners.

The 300M Citizens’ Challenge also offers exciting content and Story Pedagogy, which combines stories from India’s linguistic heritage with education on the SDG goals of quality education, gender equality, and climate action. This approach is based on deep learning with children and community experiences, using Active Story-Based Learning and Think Ask Discuss Act Achieve (TADAA).

In addition to educational content, the 300M Citizens’ Challenge also provides training and technology to teachers, with the goal of empowering them to creatively engage children in learning and bring classrooms to life. This includes training on the use of Story Pedagogy and Active Story-Based Learning, as well as technology tools such as tablets and smart classrooms. The ultimate goal of the 300M Citizens’ Challenge is to help India achieve its potential by empowering children to become Reader-Leaders and agents of change in their communities, ultimately bringing sustainable change to society.

With about 300 Million 5-18-year-olds, India has the world’s largest youth population. Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, MP, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and UP account for about 40% of this young population. Most of them cannot read at grade level.

India has 300 million children enrolled in schools; 150 million in K-5; 50% cannot read at grade level. The inability to read at grade level leads to entrenched poverty and a disabling cycle.

Early reading for joy and meaning leads to reduced dropout rates and increased understanding to break the cycle of poverty, leading to positive changes for families, communities, and the planet, helping India reach its potential
